Designing an Aviation Search and Rescue Coordination Platform (VATM ASRCC)
Product

Designing interfaces for critical, mission-safe enterprise applications presents a unique set of challenges. Unlike standard consumer applications, systems built for emergency response require absolute layout certainty, immediate data retrieval, and zero tolerance for cognitive friction. I recently led the UI/UX design for the VATM ASRCC (Aviation Search and Rescue Coordination Center) digital platform.
When an aviation emergency occurs, operators must coordinate search and rescue (SAR) teams, track incidents, map search zones, and calculate safety coefficients under intense time pressure. Architecting this platform required balancing dense geographical information systems (GIS) data with complex mathematical search parameters.
Reflecting on the system interface shown in "Sự cố khẩn nguy.jpg", here is a deep dive into how we structured this high-stakes product to ensure clarity, safety, and rapid coordination.
1. The Three-Column Structural Logic for Mission-Critical Data
In emergency dispatch and tracking systems, the interface layout must mirror the operator's mental workflow during a crisis. We engineered a robust three-column split framework to categorize system data logically:
The Left Sidebar (Data Layering & Configuration): This pane houses all system inputs, split into categories like active SAR Forces (
Lực lượng TKCN), Vehicles (Phương tiện TKCN), Incidents (Sự cố khẩn nguy), and Radar Coverage toggles (VHF, HF, and Radar coverage areas). Operators can filter background maps and toggle visual tracking layers on or off instantly. The Central Map Canvas (The Ground Truth Viewport): Taking up the bulk of the visual real estate, the interactive map acts as the single source of truth. As seen in "Sự cố khẩn nguy.jpg", it renders topographical details, waterways, and specific polygon boundary search areas (such as the highlighted zones near Sa Kream and Krakor). Pinned at the top of the map is a floating toolbar for drawing tool sets, area measuring instruments, and visual coordinate markers.
The Right Sidebar (Parameter Input & Analytics): This specialized column handles mathematical calculation fields for precise tracking. It allows operators to view specific search regions (
Khu vực...), cross-reference flight path anomalies (Đường bay), analyze coordinate matrices, input margin of error estimations (Sai số máy bay gặp nạn), and set the baseline Safety Coefficient (Hệ số an toàn).
2. Solving High-Density UI Challenges for Emergency Scenarios
When human lives depend on digital workflows, traditional UI patterns must be optimized for maximum clarity. We focused heavily on reducing complexity during high-stress operations.
Streamlining Tab Overflows via Global Active Filters
At the top right of the screen, we implemented a persistent breadcrumb pill indicator style (X Lực lượng TKCN, X Phương tiện TKCN, X Sự cố khẩn nguy). These act as active visual anchors, keeping the operator aware of exactly which data filters are currently rendering on the spatial map layer, allowing them to quickly close unnecessary tracking noise with a single click.
Form Field Optimization and Inline Validation
The parametric panel on the right contains numerous dense input forms, from long geographic coordinate vectors to complex digital IDs. To tackle this, we optimized the input components with clear field labels, integrated contextual quick-search icons inside coordinate boxes, and added inline status icons (such as the edit pencil next to SỰ CỐ ID) to make manual value adjustments explicit and foolproof.
Maximizing Map Real Estate via Collapsible Navigation
Because spatial awareness is paramount during a search and rescue operation, we designed the left-hand data layer panel with a quick-collapse chevron switch. This simple micro-interaction empowers operators to temporarily tuck away the navigation parameters and expand the geographical canvas across the entire viewport when tracking real-time emergency field movements.
3. Designing for Accessibility, Trust, and Compliance
The platform utilizes a deep navy header blue (VATM ASRCC) which establishes professional authority, paired with neutral grays for form fields to prevent visual exhaustion during long, multi-hour tracking shifts.
To ensure the product complies with enterprise design standards and high accessibility markers, we selected distinct, high-contrast primary colors for critical data indicators: bright sky-blue for polygon target search zones, sharp royal blue for active data states, and electric cyan highlights to instantly draw the eye to active target objects on the map grid.
4. Retrospective & Conclusion
Looking at the successfully deployed dashboard in "Sự cố khẩn nguy.jpg", the VATM ASRCC platform demonstrates that enterprise software can be highly functional without being overwhelming. By translating dense mathematical variables, map coordinates, and asset statuses into an intuitive, three-tiered visual system, we reduced the time required for operators to cross-examine critical variables.
