Role: Product Designer (UI/UX)

1. Project Overview

  • The Product: A mobile-friendly entertainment website created by Funzy (a game platform) and Metfone (the biggest telecom company in Cambodia). It allows users to play casual web games easily, subscribe to premium plans, and play without using up their mobile data.

  • The Goal: To help Metfone keep customers active and increase revenue, while helping Funzy reach millions of mobile users in Cambodia.

2. Core UI/UX Problems & Design Solutions

As a UI/UX designer, my main job in this project is to make the connection between telecom services (like SMS and mobile billing) and gaming as smooth and enjoyable as possible. Here is how we solve the main problems:

Problem 1: Hard or Slow Registration Flows

  • The Challenge: Asking users to type in long emails and passwords usually makes them close the website, especially on mobile phones. Also, many users do not have credit cards to pay for games.

  • The UI/UX Solution:

    • Quick Phone Login: We designed a clean screen where users only need to enter their phone number to get a quick SMS code (OTP).

    • One-Click Play: The design keeps forms as simple as possible. Users can log in and start playing in just a few seconds.

Problem 2: Slow Internet and Low-End Smartphones

  • The Challenge: Many users in Cambodia use affordable smartphones and might have weak 3G or 4G signals in countryside areas. The website must load fast.

  • The UI/UX Solution:

    • Lightweight Design: We used light visual elements, compressed images, and clean layouts so the page loads quickly on any browser.

    • Instant Gaming: Games open directly inside the browser without downloading anything. We designed simple loading screens (like skeleton screens) to show users that the game is loading, which stops them from leaving.

Problem 3: Confusing Subscription and Payment Details

  • The Challenge: Users hate accidental charges. If the subscription price is hidden, users will lose trust in both Metfone and Funzy.

  • The UI/UX Solution:

    • Clear Pricing Cards: We designed very clear boxes showing the price for Daily, Weekly, or Monthly plans (for example: $0.10/day).

    • Confirmation Pop-ups: Before charging any money, a clear pop-up screen asks the user to confirm their choice and explains how they can cancel the service at any time.

Problem 4: Keeping Users Engaged and Exploring Games

  • The Challenge: With many games available, the website needs to be interesting so users don't get bored and leave quickly.

  • The UI/UX Solution:

    • App-Like Feel: Even though it is a website, it feels like a mobile app. We put the main navigation buttons at the bottom of the screen so they are easy to reach with one thumb.

    • Easy Browsing: We used horizontal scrolling lists for "Trending" or "New" games to save screen space and make browsing fun.

3. Designing for the Cambodian Market (Localization)

  • Khmer Language Layout: The Khmer script takes up more vertical space than English. We designed flexible text boxes to make sure the text never overlaps or breaks the layout.

  • Brand Trust: We combined Metfone’s official colors with Funzy’s fun gaming style. This makes users feel safe and secure when using the portal.
